Fez is one of the most authentic cities in Morocco and home to the largest Medina in the world. An UNESCO World Heritage Site the Medina of Fez is also considered the world’s largest car-free urban space.

When I was planning what places to visit in Morocco I was only considering Chefchaouen (full travel guide here), Marrakech and The Sahara desert for a matter of time but I’m glad I changed my mind and spent a few days in Fez because it really is a remarkable part of Morocco.

Here are some of the things you should do while exploring this surprising Moroccan city:

  • Visit the Chouara Tannery

This is probably one of the most iconic places to see in Fez and surely something you haven’t seen (or smelt) before. This tannery is nearly 1000 years old. They bring the hides here to be dyed from natural substances and then turn them into bags, jackets, shoes, etc. It’s an interesting and smelly process that involves pigeon poop, cow urine, salt and other stuff. The best view is from above and as soon as you get there they give you a small spring of mint to help with the strong smell. It’s a stinky experience but definitely a must-see!

  • Discover The Old Medina of Fez

The first time you step in to The Old Medina feels like going back in time to an ancient and unique city. Also known as Fes el Bali (Arabic: فاس البالي ) the Old Medina is a place to literally get lost for hours. As I mentioned before is the largest Medina in the world so I recommend you to get a guide because is so big and confusing that is almost impossible to find the way if it’s your first time besides a guide can share with you everything he knows about the history and cool spots around.

  • Experience dinning at Eden at Palais Amani

Moroccan food is amazing and you can immerse in a variety of flavors at Eden at Palais Amani. I went for lunch and I was delighted with the Market Moroccan Menu they offer which is a menu that reflects the abundance of seasonal produce with innovative and healthy dishes. I had the three-course meal and it was really good, probably one of the best meals I had in Fez and in addition to that you can eat in their beautiful patio which is perfect on day time!

  • Visit the Al-Attarine Madrasa

The Medersa el-Attarine or Al-Attarine Madrasa is a lovely place to visit specially if you love design and architecture. Its interiors are just stunning and picture perfect! If you go early it won’t be that crowded.

  • Watch the sunset from a rooftop

The view of Fez from above is incredible, make sure to find a rooftop where you can enjoy the sun going down. My favorite place was the rooftop bar at Riad Fes with probably the best view in town, enjoy some mint tea or a glass of wine at magic hour!

Have you been to Fez or planning on going? Let me know what else would you add to this list!

Happy adventures 😀
