Da Nang (Đà Nẵng) is the biggest city in Central Vietnam. Many people skip it when is visiting the country but if you are close and have the chance to go just for the day (or a few hours) you should do it, there are a couple of interesting things you can see there but do it specially to visit the Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son).

Vietnam is such a big and amazing country to explore and I can’t wait to tell you more about it in the upcoming posts but I wanted to share with you a little about the Marble Mountains because I think it’s a really cool spot with cool history.

The Marble Mountains are a group of five mountains named after the five elements: Hoa Son (fire), Kim Son (metal), Tho Are (earth), Thuy Son (water) and Moc Son (wood). Thuy Son is the largest of the five mountains and the only one accessible to visitors.

The myth says that a dragon emerged from the water from Non Nuoc Beach and left an egg there. Then after one thousand days a beautiful girl came out of the egg and eventually all the shell pieces grew into the stunning Marble Mountains.

Not only is the amazing view worth to visit this place but the caves, tunnels, temples and the pagodas that are in there. There’s one cave that I liked a lot where you can climb through a narrow hole and come out on the other side!

There are 156 stairs to the summit of Thuy Son and is gonna get a little sweaty to get to the top so make sure to bring comfortable shoes and water. It takes some time to go all the way up but you won’t regret it once you see the panoramic view of Da Nang city and the coast with the Sea of China in the background.

Getting there

The entrance fee for this little adventure is around 15,000 VND ($1) . There are local buses between Da Nang and Hoi An that can take you to the Marble Mountains. You can also get private transportation or take a small tour with a guide as I did from Hoi An. I’d recommend the tour guide because there’s a lot of history about this place that they can share better.
